Rabbi earns double doctorate, to be honored at luncheon
May 15, 2004
Rabbi Harry Manhoff, a lecturer in the religious
studies department at Saint Mary's College of California and one of the
few congregational rabbis in the country with a doctorate in
the New Testament, recently received a Doctorate of Divinity from
Hebrew Union College. The honorary degree marks the 25th anniversary of
his rabbinical ordination.
Manhoff previously completed a Ph.D. in religious
studies with a focus on the New Testament and Christian origins at the
University of California at Santa Barbara in 2000.
Manhoff, often seen in his trademark New York Yankees
skullcap and "Superman" necktie, will be honored for his latest
achievement by his congregation at Temple Beth Sholom in San Leandro
during a special service and luncheon on May 15.
Manhoff's fascination with the New Testament began more
than a decade ago while he was co-teaching an extension class with a
Christian minister at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He plans to begin work
next year on a book titled A Modern Rabbi in Search of
Historical Jesus.
